You Can Eat Cookies While Keto!

But for the sake of didactics, let's delve into the increasingly familiar world of the ketogenic diet.

With so many diet options available today, it can be challenging to understand what each one proposes and which one best fits the body, routine, personal goals and well-being of those who want to lose weight.

Two of the most sought after diet programs for those who want to lose weight today are the ketogenic diet (also called Keto) and the low carb diet. Although both propose a reduced consumption of carbohydrates to decrease the balance, they are not the same!

The main difference lies in how restrictive of carbs each diet is - and Keto is the most restrictive one!

The low carb diet proposes reducing carbohydrates' consumption to an average of 50g to 150g daily. On the other hand, Keto demands a much stricter decrease in carbohydrate intake - 50g per day TOPS.

Another difference between the two diets lies in the consumption of proteins and fats. While low carb diets only recommend reducing carbohydrates, the keto diet calls for increased consumption of proteins and fats.

One of the low carb diet goals is not to generate insulin spikes in the body, so it is advisable to consume slow-absorbing carbohydrates. In this way, the body burns the fat available in the body and prevents the production of new fat cells.

The keto diet aims to almost zero the insulin levels in the blood so that the body goes into ketosis and uses the body's fat stock to maintain its proper functioning. 

Even though weight loss is more noticeable in less time on the ketogenic diet, it must be said that it's not an easy strategy to maintain, nor does every individual adapt to it or should do it.

 How to keto diet?

First, we think you should see a professional! Since the keto diet can represent a radical change of lifestyle and nutrient intake, different individuals will need a different "prescription"! A professional will consider factors such as age, gender, current weight, height and level of physical activity to create a balanced diet for you! 

It's important to note that during the first week on the keto diet, which is an adaptation phase, the lack of glucose (that feeds the brain) can cause side effects such as the "keto flu," which includes headache, weakness, and irritability; bad breath; and fatigue. But that tends to stabilize as the body "gets used" to this new way of creating energy.

"Any time you make a fundamental change in your diet your body is going to react - and when it does you are bound to experience certain symptoms or problems," says Stephen Sondike, MD, director of the Nutrition, Exercise, and Weight Management Program (NEW) at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

He also notes that when the diet involves reducing carbs, the most common problem is constipation. To curb it, you should eat up to five servings of low-carb vegetables daily (think broccoli, cauliflower, and lettuce)to maintain proper bowel function!

And one of the most important things for people on a keto diet is proper hydration since the body quickly becomes dehydrated once large amounts of ketones are produced!
